Winter Paralympics 2018 officially begin

This year's competition will be the biggest winter Paralympics to date, with a record 567 athletes from 48 countries vying for 80 medals in six sports: Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, Para ice hockey, snowboarding and wheelchair curling and more Russia was banned from all Paralympic competition in August 2016 after details of the country's state-sponsored doping programme first emerged but the International Paralympic Committee has confirmed that thirty Russian athletes will compete  in few events

It is the second consecutive Paralympic Games with no Russian team, with the country also excluded from the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.
