UFC 222 results: Full winners

 

Please find the play-by-play results from the main card as they happened, and then below that a full list of results from the entire fight card.

Cris Cyborg def. Yana Kunitskaya via TKO (punches) at 3:25 of Round 1

Round 1: Cyborg immediately uncorks a huge right hook that hurts Kunitskaya bad. She turtles, but Cyborg, coming in, slips up and Kunitskaya is threatening a submission. Cyborg manages to get to her feet though, but Kunitskaya hops on her back and gets her back down to the mat. A very dangerous position for Cyborg, but she eventually walks up the fence and gets back to standing, up against the fence. Good knees from Kunitskaya in the clinch. Cyborg lands a nice knee to the body herself. Kunitskaya drops down for a single-leg takedown, but Cyborg fights it off. Big knee to the body, followed by a big left hand that does some damage. Kunitskaya goes down again, but Cyborg takes a more measured approach. Kunitskaya recovers, and gets back standing. Body kick from Cyborg, then a big overhand right to the face. Kunitskaya goes down and Cyborg swarms, landing blow after blow from on top. The referee comes in and stops the fight.

Brian Ortega def. Frankie Edgar via TKO (punches) at 4:44 of Round 1

Round 1: Nothing big for the first minute or so, a couple leg kicks from Edgar land. Edgar rushes forward with three straight jabs, none quite landing, and ducks away from a retaliatory right hand from Ortega. Stiff left straight from Edgar lands on the jaw, but Ortega is fine. Overhand right from Edgar just grazes. Ortega is taking the slow approach, which most fighters tend to do against Edgar, who has an unrelenting pace. One-two jab combo lands from Edgar. Oretga connects with a good body kick, and misses with an overhand. Jumping body kick from Ortega lands, but not that hard. Right hand over the top lands hard from Edgar. Oretga catches Edgar coming in and tries to lock in a standing choke, but Edgar pulls away. Short left elbow from Ortega comes from nowhere and stuns Edgar, who was trying for yet another jab combo. Ortega hurt him bad. He throws some wide, heavy shots, and then a massive, calculated right uppercut and Edgar goes down. Ortega swarms and the referee stops the fight after a short hammerfist.

Sean O’Malley def. Andre Soukhamthath via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28)

Round 1: Soukhamthath may have a leg injury of some kind, he looks like he’s having trouble moving, and given the varied attack of O’Malley, that’s dangerous. Still, Soukhamthath comes forward and just misses with a big right hand. Good leg kick from O’Malley, and he just misses with a huge wheel kick. Left jab from O’Malley just grazes, and a spinning back fist also barely misses. He follows it up with a big kick to the chest that Soukhamthath tried to catch, and nearly put his face right into it. O’Malley with a huge right hand that drops Soukhamthath briefly. He pops back up, and eats two straight high kicks. Straight left to the body from O’Malley, who wants a finish. Overhand right lands from O’Malley, and then a left kick to the face. Soukhamthath is stumbling, dazed, but is saved by the bell.

Round 2: Soukhamthath comes right out, and he lands two straight left jabs. He then swings for the fences, barely misses with a massive haymaker, and O’Malley has to run away. Soukhamthath does still look like his leg might still be bothering him. Nice outside right hand from O’Malley. They scramble and Soukhamthath somehow ends up on top of O’Malley on the ground. O’Malley is trying for a triangle from the bottom. Elbows from the bottom for O’Malley as he continues to work the triangle. He switches to an armbar attempt and comes so close to getting it. Soukhamthath defends though, and ends up in side control. He wants mount, but O’Malley is defending well. Soukhamthath is also not really doing any damage from the top. Soukhamthath, in trying to pass, allows O’Malley to slip out from under him and nearly lock in a choke. He can’t secure it, but gets to his feet, and throws a few kicks at the downed Soukhamthath, coming very close to a head kick, but not quite landing the illegal hit.

Round 3: Soukhamthath is coming out a little bit more slowly in this round, taking deep breaths. They throw from range for a bit and when O’Malley throws a kick, he seems to have hurt his foot or leg. He stumbles, and Soukhamthath ends up on top of him. It might be better for Soukhamthath to stand and see how hurt O’Malley actually is. But he stays on top in side control, not really throwing anything, though. He’s trying to transition to mount. He lands an elbow, and briefly tries to lock in a choke. O’Malley slowly works his way to his feet, and O’Malley can’t put any pressure on his right foot. He throws a punch while hopping on his other foot. Soukhamthath gets him to the ground again. O’Malley can’t get back to his feet, but Soukhamthath is doing very little with his dominant position. The round ends. It should still be O’Malley’s fight.

Andrei Arlovski def. Stefan Struve via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Round 1: Arlovski lands a leg kick, Struve misses with a body kick. After circling from range for awhile, Arlovski lands a big overhand right. He’s finding his range. He secures a takedown, and his corner tells him to let Struve up, so he does. Struve blocks another overhand right hand. Struve throws a wild punch combo, the right hand landing nicely. They clinch, and Struve looks like he’s trying to take down Arlovski, but it’s reversed and Arlovski is on top again. Once again, he stands, because getting tied up with Struve is a scary proposition. Arlovski gets Struve against the fence, and just before the round ends, he spins Struve to the ground. They get to their feet and Struve tees off, trying to land some big punches over the top. But Arlovski clinches, and the fight ends. It’s probably Arlovski’s fight.

Round 2: Arlovski gets Struve to the mat again after some exchanging on the feet, and he gets in a dangerous position as Struve gets ahold of his foot, threatening a submission. It forced Arlovski to go into a defensive position and Struve, big as he is, managed to get up and drape himself over the top of Arlovski with 2:30 to go in the round. Struve lands some big underhand shots before Arlovski surges to his feet. Struve keeps his weight on Arlovski though, getting him against the fence, but at least Arlovski isn’t on his back. Struve tries for a slam, but Arlovski gets away with a cage grab to save himself. Arlovski lands a nice knee in the clinch that does some damage. Herb Dean separates them after some more time against the fence. Not much else happens at the end of this round.

Round 3: Arlovski lands a nice left hand after about a minute of throwing from range. Struve comes in with a sloppy jab and Arlovski lands a left uppercut. Struve says there’s an eye poke, just as Arlovski did in the previous round. It looks questionable as to whether there was a poke. Struve is complaining about his vision. The ringside physician comes in to take a look. Another angle shows that there was probably an eye poke. They resume fighting after Struve is ready, with two minutes to go. Nice jab followed by a feint left then right leg kick combo from Struve. Big right hand over the top just grazes Arlovski. Short leg kick from Struve lands. Arlovski tries a trip, but can’t get it. He hangs on though, and spins Struve down to the mat, with Arlovski in side control against the fence.

Ketlen Vieira def. Cat Zingano via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Round 1: Vieira lands a nice right hand as Zingano comes in right away, and it was a good shot. Zingano lands a nice overhand to the side of the head after feinting a kick. They tie up in the clinch, and Zingano lands a nice knee to the body. Leg kick from Zingano, and she eats an overhand from Vieira for her troubles. Vieira is trying to land a power shot. She misses with a big right-left, and Zingano ducks under for a takedown. She gets it, but they both bounce right back up. Nice knee to the body from Zingano when they clinch again. Vieira catches the next knee and secures a takedown with a little over a minute to go in the round. Zingano has good wrist control and manages to stall out the round without absorbing much damage from the top.

Round 2: Zingano is immediately in deep trouble as Vieira secures the takedown right into the mount position. It was a judo arm throw, a very good one, and Zingano is trying hard to get out of the position. Vieira briefly tries an arm triangle, but Zingano slips out of it. Vieira gets back to her feet, and then jumps back down, this time into full guard. She passes into half guard, occasionally connecting with short punches for the ground-and-pound. Vieira winds up in full guard again, and Zingano lands a few good elbows from the bottom. But she doesn’t even begin getting to her feet until the final 10 seconds of the round.

Round 3: Zingano comes out firing, connecting with a big right hand, and then another. Vieira walks through it, and checks a leg kick from Zingano, who appeared to suffer some kind of injury from the kick. She was immediately favoring her foot or ankle, and she lost what momentum she had started the round with. Vieira wound up getting the takedown, into full guard. Zingano, definitely down on the scorecards, exploded upward and got to her feet. She ended up with her back to the fence in the clinch, with 90 seconds to go. Vieira stalls against the fence, and the referee separates them. Zingano throws a leg kick, and then a head kick. Vieira is backing up. Zingano is going for it, but Vieira ties her up again with 10 seconds to go. Zingano lands a knee to the body. She probably took this round, but it shouldn’t be enough to get the win.
